O tecido errado transforma uma roupinha bonita num trapo que escorrega do corpo todo hora. A coisa mais importante não é o molde, é o tecido. Bambu, cotton jersey fininho ou malha de algodão 100% pesam menos de 150g/m² e caem certo. Anything above that starts feeling stiff and won't drape over the doll's round belly properly. I started cutting patterns for reborn babies three years ago because my first batch looked like hospital gowns for toddlers. The proportions were completely wrong — the armholes went up to the shoulders, the waist was nonexistent, and everything gap at the back. Once I learned that reborn dolls actually have a pronounced belly curve and thinner limbs compared to real newborns, the whole approach changed. I stopped using real baby patterns and started making my own block from measurements taken off actual dolls.

You need a vinyl or silicone reborn doll first, obviously. Measure the chest circumference at the widest part, the waist at the narrowest point, and the total torso length from shoulder to diaper area. Add 2 centimeters of ease for the chest and 1 centimeter for the waist. That's your minimum fabric requirement. For a basic onesie or dress, you need approximately 15 by 20 centimeters of fabric for a 45cm doll and 20 by 28 centimeters for a 60cm doll. The seam allowance matters more than people think. Use 5mm, not the standard 1cm you'd use for real clothing. Doll seams need to be nearly invisible, and a 1cm allowance creates bulk that shows through thin fabric. I use a walking foot on my sewing machine for everything — it prevents the layers from shifting, which is critical when you're working with 10cm wide pieces of jersey.

The neckline is where most people fail. Reborn dolls have proportionally large heads, so the neck opening needs to be generous. Cut it as an oval, not a circle, with the long axis running front to back. If it's too tight, you'll stretch the fabric trying to get the head through and then it'll sit crooked once the doll is dressed. My measurement for a 50cm doll is 9 centimeters wide and 7 centimeters tall for the neck hole.

Zippers are almost never the right call. They add bulk, they're difficult to hide, and most cheap doll zippers break after two dressings. Buttons work better but they need to be tiny — 4mm or smaller — and you should reinforce the buttonholes with a small square of interfacing on the inside, or they'll tear open after repeated use. Snaps are the practical choice. I use 6mm plastic snaps with a setting tool, and they hold through dozens of wash cycles without loosening. One thing nobody warns you about: fabric shrinkage. I learned this the hard way when I washed a batch of five dresses made from pre-washed cotton jersey and three of them shrank enough to become unwearable. The solution is to wash and dry your fabric before cutting, even if the pattern instructions say the fabric is pre-shrunk. Different dye lots and finishing processes from different suppliers behave differently, and you'll waste material if you skip this step.

The other problem is static cling. Synthetic fabrics like polyester jersey stick to the vinyl skin of the doll and won't stay in place. Cotton blends or bamboo jersey eliminate this entirely. If you must use synthetics for color reasons, a light spray of fabric conditioner diluted in water on the inside of the garment before dressing the doll helps significantly. One part conditioner to ten parts water, mist lightly, let it dry completely, then dress the doll.

You can draft basic patterns yourself using graph paper and a flexible ruler. The process takes about twenty minutes for a simple onesie block and gives you a template you can reuse for every doll in that size range. Free patterns online tend to be written for one specific doll brand and don't account for the variations between manufacturers. A custom-drafted block from your own measurements will always fit better than a generic downloaded pattern. Thread choice is another small detail with a big impact. Use 50-weight polyester thread, not cotton. Cotton thread frays quickly on doll garments because the seams get manipulated during dressing and undressing, and the friction from tiny snaps and buttonholes wears it down. Polyester thread is smoother and stronger at this scale. Match the thread color to the fabric exactly — mismatches are visible at this size in a way they wouldn't be on adult clothing.

Bulk fabric like denim, corduroy, or thick flannel looks adorable in photos and absolutely terrible on a reborn doll. The garment hangs rigidly away from the body instead of following the curves, and the added weight can cause the doll to tip over if the clothing is on the bottom half. Stick to lightweight fabrics under 150g/m² unless you're making outerwear that will be displayed, not worn regularly. Hand-sewn seams are sometimes recommended for a professional finish, but they take roughly ten times longer than machine stitching and the tension is harder to keep consistent. A fine needle — size 60 or 70 — with polyester thread on a machine set to a narrow zigzag or a straight stitch with medium tension produces results that are indistinguishable from hand-sewn when done correctly. The time savings alone justify using a machine.

There is no universal sizing chart for reborn dolls. Even within the same brand, two dolls listed at 50cm can differ by 3 centimeters in chest circumference depending on the sculpt. Always measure the individual doll before cutting. I keep a spreadsheet with measurements from every doll I've made clothing for, and it's saved me from multiple ruined fabric purchases. The initial investment of time in measuring pays for itself immediately.
